CFU Solemnly Commemorates the 35th Anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre

WASHINGTON D.C. – As the tragedy of the Tiananmen Square Massacre reaches the milestone of 35 years, Campaign for Uyghurs (CFU) expresses its deepest condolences to the friends and families of the victims, and calls for renewed attention to the atrocities carried out by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). This massacre is a brutal example of how the CCP represses its citizens for demanding basic human rights.

The Tiananmen Square Massacre was a tragic event sparked by the peaceful protests calling for political and economic reform. Rather than seeking reconciliation, the CCP chose violence, perpetuating repression that persists today in China’s governance. The government has been and continues to imprison those who commemorate the occasion in an attempt to rewrite the history of the Massacre. The BBC reported that six individuals were imprisoned this year in Hong Kong under the draconian Article 23 security law for commemorating the crackdown on social media, citing “incited hatred.”

Executive Director Rushan Abbas, noted the importance of remembering this tragedy in conjunction with the regime’s ongoing human rights abuses. “The Tiananmen Square Massacre and ongoing persecution of the Uyghur people by the CCP illustrate that ‘the more things change, the more they stay the same.’ As we commemorate the 35th anniversary, it is crucial to educate younger generations about this tragic event, preserving the memories of the victims and ensuring the CCP cannot erase history. The world must never forget the inhumane acts of brutality of the Communist regime.”

On the 35th anniversary of this somber event, CFU remembers the brave student protesters and stands in solidarity with those facing persecution by the CCP as they seek justice today. CFU calls upon the international community to genuinely honor those who perished on that tragic day in 1989 by advocating for justice and supporting those who continue to suffer under the CCP regime through meaningful sanctions against attacks on human dignity and freedom.
