CFU Joins 55 Organizations Calling for Sanctions to Stop Uyghur Genocide

Campaign for Uyghurs (CFU) has joined 55 organizations dedicated to human rights in China and to the plight of persecuted ethno-religious groups in East Turkistan in a joint statement. The letter, led by the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation (VOC), urges Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen, and Secretary of State Antony Blinken, to sanction all Chinese officials responsible for the Uyghur genocide, as required by law under Section 6 of the Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act of 2020.

Pointing at the new evidence documented through the “Xinjiang Police Files,” guided by Dr. Adrian Zenz, Senior Fellow and Director in China Studies at the VOC, the letter openly asks to incriminate “multiple Chinese government officials at the highest levels of the central government”. These officials include Zhao Kezhi, Minister of Public Security in Beijing, and Wang Yang, Head of the Central Xinjiang Work Coordination Small Group. The letter emphasizes the importance of enforcement, saying “By imposing stringent sanctions under the Global Magnitsky Act, the United States can send a powerful message that the world will not stand by as Beijing commits atrocities in violation of the Genocide Convention of 1948.”

Executive Director Rushan Abbas said “Why are Chinese government officials still allowed to buy homes and invest all over the world? Magnitsky sanctions should be applied to their international assets to freeze their assets and make the handling of their wealth a crime. It is a treaty obligation of all governments, not just the U.S., to comply with the Genocide Convention of 1948. They should, at the very least, sanctioning those who are deliberately committing genocide against millions of Uyghurs in East Turkistan.”

CFU urges the United States to sanction the officials responsible for genocide without further delay given the extensive evidence revealed by the Xinjiang Police Files. Coordination and implementation with U.S. allies would further enhance the impact of such sanctions.
