Campaign for Uyghurs (CFU) extends its heartfelt wishes to the global Muslim community this Ramadan and calls for urgent action to end the suffering of Uyghurs. The sacred month of Ramadan is a core component of the Muslim faith, and it marks a month of spiritual enrichment, fasting, and devotion to God and humanity.

The blessed month of Ramadan is also synonymous with the extreme torture and hardships perpetrated by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), as it wages a brutal war on Islam amidst the ongoing Uyghur genocide. The CCP ludicrously deems any public expression of the Islamic faith as “religious extremism” and outlaws religious practices among the Uyghurs, including fasting, owning a Qur’an, and praying. During Ramadan, Uyghurs are forced to abandon their fasts, consume non-halal (prohibited) products, and engage in other activities that contradict their faith. If they refuse, they are subject to severe punishment.

In the final days preceding the Holy Ramadan, CCP official Ma Xingrui emphasized the inevitability of the sinicization of Islam in the Uyghur region. His declaration, made during China’s annual parliamentary sessions in Beijing, starkly signals that the CCP will continue its Uyghur genocide and relentless war on religion.

Rushan Abbas, the Executive Director of CFU, asserts, “This Ramadan, it is imperative for the global Muslim community and advocates for human rights to unite in calling for an end to the Uyghur genocide perpetrated by the Chinese regime. To the Uyghurs, Ramadan is marked by extreme suffering, pervasive surveillance, and unyielding oppression. This year, the situation is further inflamed by Ma Xingrui’s audacious remarks about the inevitability of the sinicization of Islam in East Turkistan. As we can see, the resounding silence of the international community has only emboldened the CCP to openly declare its crimes. The Uyghurs, and the entire world for that matter, cannot tolerate another Ramadan where the global community idly stands by in the face of the CCP’s war on religious freedom.”

CFU calls upon international leaders, governments, and the global Islamic community to take decisive action to halt the CCP’s genocidal policy. CFU reaffirms that the suffering of Uyghurs during this Ramadan is a collective responsibility not only for the Muslim community but also for a world committed to religious freedom.

CFU is a Washington D.C. based non-profit organization committed to amplifying Uyghur voices and raising awareness of the atrocities being carried out in the Uyghur Region. In recognition of our efforts, CFU was awarded the World Democracy Courage Tribute in July 2021 and was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 2022.
